As has been examined throughout this volume, Gino Germani is recognised as one of the main references of Argentine and Latin American sociology. His scientific and intellectual legacy is reflected in contemporary scientific production, which is manifested in quotes from his books, articles and works. This text aims to trace the communicative structures that link Gino Germani’s texts with the scientific production of recent decades, through an exploratory analysis of citations to his work in two databases that index scientific articles: Web of Science (from Clarivate Analytics) and SciELO (a Latin American regional initiative). Despite the limitations and biases that both databases present in the composition of their journal collections, I consider that observing a significant number of scientific articles that cite Germani’s work can provide a panoramic view of how his legacy has interacted with different thematic and disciplinary interests over time. The preliminary results of the research identified 834 and 370 documents that cite Germani’s work indexed in Web of Science and SciELO, respectively, forming a database of more than 1,000 documents that, to a greater or lesser extent, make use of the texts written by this Italian-Argentine sociologist. The research will continue to compare, using consolidated scientometric research techniques and network theory, the ways in which Germani’s work is cited in the two databases and different areas of knowledge, with the aim of visualising temporal and geographic patterns and trends and disciplines. Furthermore, we will analyse how each discipline and/or speciality and each national and/or regional context uses his work differently, which translates, for example, into different volumes of citations for his main books and articles. Ultimately, our interest here is not to attribute a ‘unity’ to Germani’s production as a whole, but to observe how his texts act as an open cognitive resource that is used contingently by researchers and disciplines for their research interests.
