The Graduate Program in Sociology and Anthropology (PPGSA) was created in 1980, following the constitution of the MSc in Social Sciences. This course became the MSc in Sociology in 1988 and, five years later, it became the Graduate Program in Sociology, as the PhD course was set up. In 1998, in line with the significant share of anthropologists within the staff and the strenghtening of the affiliation between the areas of sociology and anthropology, the Program assumed its definitive designation.
PPGSA aims at training high-level teachers and researchers, offering a MSc degree in Sociology (with concentration in Anthropology) and a PhD degree in Humanities (Sociology or Cultural Anthropoloy). Between 2004 and 2018, PPGSA awarded 298 MSc and 211 PhD degree, training professionals who nowadays multiply knowledge in the most important teaching and research institutions in Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil and abroad. PPGSA is ranked as a 7 Graduate Program at Capes, and provides a space of professional training where sociology and anthropology interact without dissolving their particular methods and approaches. Accordingly, research themes are reinvigorated in the confrontation of diverse professional and disciplinary backgrounds and in the ongoing effort of building interdisciplinary knowledge. The Faculty is distributed in 6 Research Lines, teaching and supervising PhD and MSc theses, as well as in 23 Research Laboratories, favoring the development of complex approaches to pressing social issues. We also highlight the vast national and international performance PPGSA has exhibited through teaching and research exchanges and agreements, reputed journals such as Sociologia & Antropologia and Dilemas, the publication of the books under the Sociology & Anthropology Collection, and the countless awards received by PPGSA researchers. PPGSA holds scientific events regularly, hosting visiting researchers and professors from other research institutions in Brazil and abroad often. PPGSA is part of the Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences (IFCS) of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), which allows acess to the vast collection of the IFCS Library, comprised by more than 60 thousand titles in Social Sciences, History and Philosophy, in addition to computer and sound and image laboratories.
