ABSTRACT

The purpose of this dissertation is to elaborate a “Sociology of the Sociology of Education” in Brazil from the 1920s up to the late 1970s and, hopefully, contribute to the understanding of the reasons why Brazilian Social Scientist have remained indifferent both to the public debate and policies that have boosted up the prominence as well as the supply of education in this country, since the 1990s. More specifically, the attempt is to propose a socio-historical analysis of the field of Sociology of Education using its theoretical and institutional developments as the guiding line. Particularly stressed are the relationships among those processes and the political contexts of various nation-building projects, which entailed the very definition of the role the Social Sciences should perform in this country, including, their possibilities (or impossibilities) to comprise policy sciences.
